Translation
Already the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect upon most of them, so they do not believe.
Tafsir
The word, for chastisement, has already proved true, it has become due, for most of them, for they, in other words, most of them, will not believe.
Tafsir of Surah Yaseen
The Messenger was sent as a Warner
Allah exalted says,
يس
Ya Sin.
We have already discussed the individual letters at the beginning of Surah Al-Baqarah.
وَالْقُرْانِ الْحَكِيمِ
By the Qur'an, full of wisdom,
means, Al-Muhkam (perfect) which falsehood cannot come to from before it or behind it
إِنَّكَ
Truly, you (means, O Muhammad),
لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
عَلَى صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
are one of the Messengers, on the straight path.
means, following a straight methodology and religion, and an upright Law.
تَنزِيلَ الْعَزِيزِ الرَّحِيمِ
Sent down by the Almighty, the Most Merciful.
means, this path which you have brought is a revelation from the Lord of might Who is Most Merciful to His believing servants.
This is like the Ayah:
وَإِنَّكَ لَتَهْدِى إِلَى صِرَطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
صِرَطِ اللَّهِ الَّذِى لَهُ مَا فِى السَّمَـوَتِ وَمَا فِى الاٌّرْضِ أَلَا إِلَى اللَّهِ تَصِيرُ الاٍّمُورُ
And verily, you are indeed guiding (mankind) to the straight path. The path of Allah to Whom belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth. Verily, to Allah all matters return. (42:52-53)
لِتُنذِرَ قَوْمًا مَّا أُنذِرَ ابَاوُهُمْ فَهُمْ غَافِلُونَ
In order that you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they are heedless.
This refers to the Arabs, for no warner had come to them before him. The fact that they alone are mentioned does not mean that others are excluded, just as mentioning some individuals does not mean that all others are excluded. We have already mentioned the Ayat and Mutawatir Hadiths which state that the mission of the Prophet is universal, when we discussed the meaning of the Ayah:
قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي رَسُولُ اللّهِ إِلَيْكُمْ جَمِيعًا
(Say:O mankind! Verily, I am sent to you all as the Messenger of Allah.) (7:158)
لَقَدْ حَقَّ الْقَوْلُ عَلَى أَكْثَرِهِمْ
Indeed the Word has proved true against most of them,
Ibn Jarir said,
The punishment has become inevitable for most of them, because Allah has decreed in the Mother of the Book (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz) that they will not believe.
فَهُمْ لَا يُوْمِنُونَ
so they will not believe.
i.e. in Allah, or in His Messengers
The State of Those Who are decreed to be among the Doomed
Allah says:`In the case of those who are decreed to be among the doomed,
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ أَغْلَلاً فَهِيَ إِلَى الَاذْقَانِ فَهُم مُّقْمَحُونَ
Verily, We have put on their necks iron collars reaching to the chins, so that their heads are raised up.
Allah says:`In the case of those who are decreed to be among the doomed, when it comes to the matter of being guided, We have made them like a person who has a chain around his neck and whose hands are tied together beneath his chin so that his head is lifted up.' As Allah says:
فَهُم مُّقْمَحُونَ
(so that their heads are raised up).
Mentioning the chains around the neck is sufficient and there is no need to mention the hands, although they are referred to by implication.
Al-`Awfi said, narrating from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, concerning the Ayah:
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ أَغْلَلاً فَهِيَ إِلَى الَاذْقَانِ فَهُم مُّقْمَحُونَ
Verily, We have put on their necks iron collars reaching to the chins, so that their heads are raised up.
This is like the Ayah:
وَلَا تَجْعَلْ يَدَكَ مَغْلُولَةً إِلَى عُنُقِكَ
And let not your hand be tied (like a miser) to your neck. (17:29)
meaning that their hands are tied to their necks and they cannot stretch them forth in order to do any good deeds.
فَهُم مُّقْمَحُونَ
so that their heads are raised up.
according to Mujahid it means their heads are raised, and their hands are placed over their mouths, so they are restrained from doing anything good
وَجَعَلْنَا مِن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ سَدًّا
And We have put a barrier before them,
Mujahid said,
Between them and the truth.
وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ سَدًّا
and a barrier behind them,
Mujahid said,
Between them and the truth, so they are confused.
Qatadah said,
They move from one form of misguidance to another.
فَأَغْشَيْنَاهُمْ
and We have covered them up,
means, `We have blinded their eyes to the truth.'
Ibn Jarir said,
It was narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that he used to recite Fa a`shaynahum (instead of Fa'aghshaynahum), from Al-`Asha (weakness of the sight, blindness), which is a complaint of the eye.
فَهُمْ لَا يُبْصِرُونَ
so that they cannot see.
means, they cannot benefit from goodness or be guided to it.
Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam said,
Allah placed this barrier between them and Islam and Iman, so that they will never reach it,
and he recited:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ حَقَّتْ عَلَيْهِمْ كَلِمَةُ رَبِّكَ لَا يُوْمِنُونَ
وَلَوْ جَأءَتْهُمْ كُلُّ ءايَةٍ حَتَّى يَرَوُاْ الْعَذَابَ الاٌّلِيمَ
Truly, those, against whom the Word (wrath) of your Lord has been justified, will not believe, Even if every sign should come to them, until they see the painful torment. (10:96-97)
Then he said, Whoever has been prevented by Allah, will never be able.
Ikrimah said,
Abu Jahl said, `If I see Muhammad, I will do such and such.' Then Allah revealed:
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ أَغْلَلاً فَهِيَ إِلَى الَاذْقَانِ فَهُم مُّقْمَحُونَ
وَجَعَلْنَا مِن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ سَدًّا وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ سَدًّا فَأَغْشَيْنَاهُمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُبْصِرُونَ
Verily, We have put on their necks iron collars reaching to the chins, so that their heads are raised up. And We have put a barrier before them, and a barrier behind them, and We have covered them up, so that they cannot see.
فَهُمْ لَا يُبْصِرُونَ
(so that they cannot see).
He said,
They used to say, `Here is Muhammad,' and he would say, `Where is he? Where is he?' And he would not be able to see him.
Ibn Jarir also recorded this.
وَسَوَاء عَلَيْهِمْ أَأَنذَرْتَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تُنذِرْهُمْ لَا يُوْمِنُونَ
It is the same to them whether you warn them or you warn them not, they will not believe.
means, Allah has decreed that they will be misguided, so warning them will not help them and will not have any effect on them. Something similar has already been seen at the beginning of Surah Al-Baqarah,
and Allah also says:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ حَقَّتْ عَلَيْهِمْ كَلِمَةُ رَبِّكَ لَا يُوْمِنُونَ
وَلَوْ جَأءَتْهُمْ كُلُّ ءايَةٍ حَتَّى يَرَوُاْ الْعَذَابَ الاٌّلِيمَ
Truly, those, against whom the Word (wrath) of your Lord has been justified, will not believe, Even if every sign should come to them, until they see the painful torment. (10:96-97
إِنَّمَا تُنذِرُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الذِّكْرَ
You can only warn him who follows the Reminder,
means, `only the believers will benefit from your warning, those who follow the Reminder,' which is the Qur'an.
وَخَشِيَ الرَّحْمَن بِالْغَيْبِ
and fears the Most Gracious unseen.
means, even when no one sees him except Allah, may He be blessed and exalted, he knows that Allah is watching him and sees what he does.
فَبَشِّرْهُ بِمَغْفِرَةٍ
Bear you to such one the glad tidings of forgiveness, (i.e., of his sins),
وَأَجْرٍ كَرِيمٍ
and a generous reward.
means, one that is vast and great and beautiful.
This is like the Ayah:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُم بِالْغَيْبِ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْرٌ كَبِيرٌ
Verily, those who fear their Lord unseen, theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward. (67:12
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْيِي الْمَوْتَى
Verily, We give life to the dead,
means, on the Day of Resurrection.
This also indicates that Allah gives life to the heart of whomever He wills among the disbelievers, those whose hearts have died in misguidance, by guiding them after that to the truth.
As Allah says after mentioning hardness of the heart:
اعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُحْىِ الاٌّرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا قَدْ بَيَّنَّا لَكُمُ الاٌّيَـتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its death! Indeed We have made clear the Ayat to you, that you may understand. (57:17)
وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا
and We record that which they send before (them),
means, their deeds.
وَاثَارَهُمْ
and their traces,
means, `We write down the deeds which they used to do themselves, and the legacy they left behind, so We will requite them for that:if it is good, then We will reward them, and if it is evil, then We will punish them.'
This is like the Hadith:
مَنْ سَنَّ فِي الاِْسْلَمِ سُنَّةً حَسَنَةً كَانَ لَهُ أَجْرُهَا وَأَجْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْقُصَ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْيًا
وَمَنْ سَنَّ فِي الاِْسْلَمِ سُنَّةً سَيِّـــيَـةً كَانَ عَلَيْهِ وِزْرُهَا وَوِزْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْقُصَ مِنْ أَوْزَارِهِمْ شَيْيًا
Whoever starts (or sets an example of) something good in Islam, will have a reward for it, and a reward equal to that of everyone who does it after him, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest.
Whoever starts (or sets an example of) something evil in Islam, will bear the burden for that, and a burden equal to that of everyone who does it after him, without that detracting from their burden in the slightest.
This was recorded by Muslim from Jarir bin Abdullah Al-Bajali, may Allah be pleased with him in which is detailed a story of the people from the Mudar tribe, who were wearing woolen rags.
Ibn Abi Hatim recorded this Hadith in full from Jarir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him. In it the Prophet then recited:
وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا وَاثَارَهُمْ
(and We record that which they send before (them), and their traces),
Muslim also recorded it with a different chain of narration.
There is also another Hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said,
The Messenger of Allah said:
إِذَا مَاتَ ابْنُ ادَمَ انْقَطَعَ عَمَلُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ ثَلَثٍ
مِنْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ
أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ
أَوْ صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ مِنْ بَعْدِه
When the son of Adam dies, all his deeds come to an end except three:
knowledge which is beneficial to others,
a righteous child who prays for him,
or ongoing charity which he leaves behind.
Sufyan Ath-Thawri reported that Abu Sa`id said, I heard Mujahid say concerning the Ayah:
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْيِي الْمَوْتَى
وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا وَاثَارَهُمْ
(Verily, We give life to the dead, and We record that which they send before (them), and their traces),
`What they left behind of misguidance.'
Ibn Abi Najih and others said, narrating from Mujahid:
مَا قَدَّمُوا
(that which they send before (them),
Their deeds.
وَاثَارَهُمْ
(and their traces).
Their footsteps.
This was also the view of Al-Hasan and Qatadah.
وَاثَارَهُمْ
(and their traces). Their footsteps. Qatadah said,
If Allah were to have neglected anything with regard to you, O son of Adam, He would have neglected what the wind could remove of these footsteps.
But He takes into account the footsteps of the son of Adam and all his deeds; He even takes into account these footsteps and whether they are for the purpose of obeying Allah or disobeying Him. So, whoever can have his footsteps recorded for the purpose of obeying Allah, let him do that.
Imam Ahmad recorded that Jabir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
There was an empty area around the Masjid, and Banu Salamah wanted to move to be closer to the Masjid. When the Messenger of Allah heard about that, he said to them:
I have heard that you want to move close to the Masjid.
They said, `Yes, O Messenger of Allah, that is what we want.'
He said:
يَا بَنِي سَلِمَةَ دِيَارَكُمْ تُكْتَبْ اثَارُكُمْ
دِيَارَكُمْ تُكْتَبْ اثَارُكُم
O Banu Salamah, stay where you are, and your footsteps will be recorded,
stay where you are, and your footsteps will be recorded.
This was also recorded by Muslim from Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him.
Imam Ahmad recorded that Abdullah bin `Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
A man died in Al-Madinah and the Prophet prayed over him, and said,
يَا لَيْتَهُ مَاتَ فِي غَيْرِ مَوْلِدِه
Would that he had died somewhere other than in his place of birth!
A man among the people said, `Why, O Messenger of Allah!'
The Messenger of Allah said:
إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ إِذَا تُوُفِّيَ فِي غَيْرِ مَوْلِدِهِ قِيسَ لَهُ مِنْ مَوْلِدِهِ إِلَى مُنْقَطِعِ أَثَرِهِ فِي الْجَنَّة
When a man dies somewhere other than in his place of birth, it will be measured for him from where he was born to where his footsteps no longer appear, (and this is the space that will be allocated for him) in Paradise.
It was also recorded by An-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah.
Ibn Jarir narrated that Thabit said,
I was walking with Anas and I began to walk quickly. He took my hand and we walked slowly, and when we had finished praying, Anas said, `I walked with Zayd bin Thabit and I was walking quickly, and he said:O Anas! Do you not feel that your footsteps are being written down'
There is no contradiction between this and the first report; on the contrary, this indicates the same thing somewhat more forcefully. Because these footsteps are being recorded, then those which are setting an example, whether good or bad, are more likely to be recorded. And Allah knows best.
وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أحْصَيْنَاهُ فِي إِمَامٍ مُبِينٍ
and all things We have recorded with numbers (as a record) in Imam Mubin (a Clear Book).
means, everything that exists is precisely dictated in a record in Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz.
Al-Imam Al-Mubin here refers to the source of all records.
This was the view of Mujahid, Qatadah and Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam.
Similarly, Allah also says:
يَوْمَ نَدْعُواْ كُلَّ أُنَاسٍ بِإِمَـمِهِمْ
(And remember) the Day when We shall call together all human beings with their (respective) Imam (record of good and bad deeds. (17:71)
meaning the Book of their deeds which will testify as to their deeds, whether they were good or bad.
This is like the Ayat:
وَوُضِعَ الْكِتَـبُ وَجِـىءَ بِالنَّبِيِّيْنَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ
and the Book will be placed (open), and the Prophets and the witnesses will be brought forward, (39:69)
and,
وَوُضِعَ الْكِتَـبُ فَتَرَى الْمُجْرِمِينَ مُشْفِقِينَ مِمَّا فِيهِ وَيَقُولُونَ يوَيْلَتَنَا مَا لِهَـذَا الْكِتَـبِ لَا يُغَادِرُ صَغِيرَةً وَلَا كَبِيرَةً إِلاَّ أَحْصَاهَا وَوَجَدُواْ مَا عَمِلُواْ حَاضِرًا وَلَا يَظْلِمُ رَبُّكَ أَحَدًا
And the Book (one's Record) will be placed, and you will see the criminals, fearful of that which is (recorded) therein. They will say:Woe to us! What sort of Book is this that leaves neither a small thing nor a big thing, but has recorded it with numbers! And they will find all that they did, placed before them, and your Lord treats no one with injustice. (18:49)

Verses 7 and 8 لَقَدْ حَقَّ الْقَوْلُ عَلَىٰ أَكْثَرِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ أَغْلَالًا (The word has indeed come true about most of them, so they will not believe. Surely We have placed iron collars on their necks, so they are reaching up to their chins, and their heads are forced to remain upraised.) mean that Allah Ta’ ala has already placed before human beings two alternate ways of life - the way of kufr (disbelief) and 'Iman (faith) and the way of Jannah (Paradise) and Jahannam (the Hell) - and to give direction and substance to this call of faith, He also sent prophets and Books. In fact, He went further ahead by giving human beings the choice to first identify what is good or bad for one and then take to either of the two ways. Now if there is that unfortunate person who does neither think, nor ponders over proofs spread throughout nature, nor listens to the call of the prophets, nor deliberates in the Book of Allah, then, once this person has made a choice and has taken to a way thus chosen, Allah Ta’ ala assembles for him everything he needs to achieve that end. One who embraces the wont of disbelief, for him the supply of things and circumstances that would increase his disbelief never run short. This is what has been expressed as: لَقَدْ حَقَّ الْقَوْلُ عَلَىٰ أَكْثَرِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ (7) which means that against most of these people, because of their choice of the evil, the decisive verdict of Allah - that they are not going to believe - already stands pronounced.
Given next is a similitude of their condition by saying that they look like people whose necks have been shackled in a manner that causes their faces and eyes stay upraised rendering them totally unable to see their way on the ground. If so, it is obvious that one cannot remain safe against the likelihood of falling down into some ditch or abyss.
Then comes another similitude. It was said that it is like a wall having been placed as a barrier all around someone. Thus surrounded, this person becomes unaware of what is going on outside. Similarly, these infidels are surrounded by their ignorance and, on top of it, by their hostility and doggedness. Under these conditions, it is as if the truth present elsewhere simply does not reach them.
Imam Razi (رح) has said that there are two kinds of barriers against perception. One barrier is of the kind that prevents one from seeing even himself. The second barrier is the inability to see one's surrounding. For the disbelievers, both kinds of barriers against seeing the truth were present. Therefore, the first example is that of the first barrier, that is, one who cannot bend his neck to lower his eyes cannot see even his own self or the state in which he exists. Then the second example is that of the second barrier that stops one from seeing his surroundings. (Ruh-ul- Ma’ ani)
The majority of commentators have declared the present verse to be a similitude of their disbelief and hostility only. And some commentators, on the basis of some narrations, have taken it to be the description of an event, that is, Abu Jahl and some others, bent on killing or hurting the Holy Prophet ﷺ ، lunged towards him but Allah Ta’ ala cast curtain over their eyes. Thus, rendered helpless, they went back. Many similar events have been reported in books of Tafsir, such as, Ibn Kathir, Ruh-ul-Ma’ ani, al-Qurtubi, Mazhari and others. But, most of these are weak narrations. The Tafsir of the verse cannot be based on such sources.

Tafsir Surat Ya Sin: 1-7
Yaa sin. Demi Al-Qur'an yang penuh hikmah, sesungguhnya kamu salah seorang dari rasul-rasul (yang berada) di atas jalan yang lurus, (sebagai wahyu) yang diturunkan oleh Yang Mahaperkasa lagi Maha Penyayang, agar kamu memberi peringatan kepada kaum yang bapak-bapak mereka belum pernah diberi peringatan, karena itu mereka lalai. Sesungguhnya telah pasti berlaku perkataan (ketentuan Allah) terhadap kebanyakan mereka, karena mereka tidak beriman. Dalam pembahasan terdahulu telah diterangkan huruf-huruf yang mengawali kebanyakan surat-surat Al-Qur'an, yaitu di dalam tafsir surat Al-Baqarah.
Telah diriwayatkan pula dari Ibnu Abbas r.a., Ikrimah, Ad-Dahhak, Al-Hasan, dan Sufyan ibnu Uyaynah, bahwa Yasin artinya ya insan alias hai manusia. Sa'id ibnu Jubair mengatakan bahwa memang seperti itulah maknanya dalam bahasa Habsyah (Etiopia). Malik ibnu Zaid ibnu Aslam mengatakan, Yasin adalah salah satu dari asma Allah ﷻ Demi Al-Qur'an yang penuh dengan hikmah. (Yasin: 2) Yakni yang muhkam, yang tidak datang kepadanya kebatilan, baik dari depan maupun dari belakangnya. sesungguhnya kamu [Hai Muhammad] salah seorang dari rasul-rasul (yang berada) di atas jalan yang lurus. (Yasin: 3-4) Artinya, berada pada suatu tuntunan, agama yang benar, dan syariat yang lurus (sebagai wahyu) yang diturunkan oleh Yang Mahaperkasa lagi Maha Penyayang. (Yasin: 5) Yaitu jalan, tuntunan dan agama yang engkau sampaikan ini diturunkan keterangannya dari Tuhan Yang Mahaperkasa lagi Maha Penyayang untuk hamba-hamba-Nya yang beriman.
Sebagaimana yang disebutkan dalam ayat lain melalui firman-Nya: Dan sesungguhnya kamu benar-benar memberi petunjuk kepada jalan yang lurus, (yaitu) jalan Allah yang kepunyaan-Nya segala apa yang ada di langit dan apa yang ada di bumi. Ingatlah, bahwa kepada Allah-lah kembali semua urusan. (Asy-Syura: 52-53) Adapun firman Allah ﷻ: agar kamu memberi peringatan kepada kaum yang bapak-bapak mereka belum pernah diberi peringatan, karena itu mereka lalai. (Yasin: 6) Yang dimaksud dengan 'mereka' adalah orang-orang Arab, karena sesungguhnya belum pernah datang kepada mereka seorang pemberi peringatan sebelum Nabi Muhammad ﷺ Penyebutan 'mereka' secara tersendiri, bukan berarti meniadakan yang lainnya.
Sebagaimana penyebutan beberapa orang tertentu, tidak meniadakan pengertiannya secara umum. Dalam pembahasan yang lalu telah disebutkan ayat-ayat dan hadis-hadis yang mutawatir, yang menunjukkan bahwa kerasulan Nabi Muhammad ﷺ bersifat umum untuk seluruh umat manusia, yaitu pada tafsir firman-Nya: Katakanlah, "Hai manusia, sesungguhnya aku adalah utusan Allah untuk kalian semuanya. (Al-A'raf: 158) Firman Allah ﷻ: Sesungguhnya telah pasti berlaku perkataan (ketentuan Allah) terhadap kebanyakan mereka. (Yasin: 7) Ibnu Jarir mengatakan bahwa azab Allah telah dipastikan atas sebagian besar dari mereka. Dengan kata lain, Allah telah menetapkan di dalam Lauh Mahfuz, bahwa sebagian besar dari mereka tidak beriman. karena mereka tidak beriman. (Yasin: 7) kepada Allah dan tidak membenarkan rasul-rasul-Nya.".
Karena kaum kafir Mekah menolak ajakan Nabi Muhammad, Allah bersumpah bahwa sungguh, pasti berlaku perkataan, yakni hukuman, terhadap kebanyakan mereka, karena mereka tidak beriman dan menolak risalah Nabi Muhammad. 8. Allah menggambarkan kondisi kaum kafir tersebut dengan firman-Nya, 'Sungguh, Kami telah memasang belenggu yang diikat di leher mereka, lalu tangan mereka diangkat ke dagu, karena itu kepala mereka tertengadah dan mendongak sehingga tidak dapat menunduk apalagi bergerak dengan bebas.
Telah menjadi ketetapan Allah untuk mengazab nenek moyang orang-orang kafir sebagaimana terjadi pada kebanyakan umat yang telah menolak kedatangan rasul yang diutus kepada mereka. Keingkaran dan kejahatan akhlak mereka menyebabkan hati mereka tidak mampu menghayati kebenaran dan tidak mau tunduk kepada Allah.

“Yaasiin."
(ayat 1)
Ibnu Jarir menerangkan dalam tafsirnya, bahwa menurut Ibnu Abbas dalam satu riwayat, bahwa kalimat Yaasiin itu adalah satu sumpah yang dipakai Allah ﷻ Menurut riwayat itu, kalimat itu adalah salah satu dari nama Allah.
Qatadah mengatakan, bahwa Yaasiin itu adalah salah satu dari nama Al-Qur'an.
Tersebut dalam Tafsir Syaukani, bahwa menurut Khalil dan Sibawaihi, “Yaasiin adalah semata-mata nama surah."
Salah satu riwayat dari Sa'id bin Jubair dan beberapa ulama yang lain bahwa Yaasiin adalah salah satu dari nama-nama Nabi Muhammad ﷺ
Abu Bakar al-Warraq mengatakan bahwa arti Yaasiin ialah, “Hai Penghulu segala manusia! “ Dalam riwayat sebuah lagi dari Ibnu Abbas, arti Yaasiin ialah, “Hai Insan! Hai Manusia! “ Yang menganut pendapat ini termasuk Ikrimah, adh-Dhahhak, Hasan Bishri, dan Sufyan bin Uyainah. Sa'id bin Jubair mengatakan pula bahwa dalam bahasa Habsyi arti Yaasiin memang “Hai Manusia! “ Tetapi ini dari dokumen lama. Apakah sampai sekarang bahasa yang terpakai di Ethiopia masih itu, belumlah kita ketahui.
Az-Zajjaj menguatkan bahwa arti Yaasiin ialah “Ya Muhammad! “
Oleh sebab itu, yang terbanyak ahli tafsir membawa artinya kepada nama Nabi Muhammad ﷺ dan kalau dikatakan bahwa artinya ialah “Hai Manusia “ maka yang dimaksud dengan manusia itu ialah Nabi Muhammad. Oleh sebab itu maka bersama dengan dua huruf di pangkal surah Thaahaa, keduanya disebutkan orang menjadi nama dari Nabi kita Muhammad ﷺ Maka adalah orang yang memakai nama “Muhammad Yaasiin “ dan “Muhammad Thaahaa “. Di tulisan indah untuk menghiasi dinding Masjid Nabawi di Madinah, dituliskan orang nama-nama Nabi kita Muhammad ﷺ, nama Thaahaa dan Yaasiin turut dituliskan.
Tetapi ahli Tafsir yang terkenal al-lmam Fakhruddin ar-Razi ketika menafsirkan kalimat Yaasiin sebagai ayat pertama dari surah Yaasiin ini telah menguraikan demikian,
“Ketahuilah olehmu bahwasanya ibadah itu ada yang ibadah hati, ada ibadah lidah dan ada ibadah anggota tubuh. Dan tiap-tiap satu-satunya itu terbagai dua pula. Satu bagian dapat dicari dengan akal apa maksudnya dan hakikatnya. Tetapi yang sebagian lagi tidak dapat dicari dengan akal apa maksudnya dan hakikatnya. Tetapi yang sebagian lagi tidak dapat dipergunakan akal untuk mengetahui maksud dan hakikatnya. Adapun ibadah hati, meskipun dia sangat jauh dari meragukan dan kebodohan, namun di dalamnya ada juga yang tidak dapat diketahui dalilnya menurut akal. Tetapi kita wajib beriman tentang adanya dan dijadikan kepercayaan sebab telah kita dengar. Umpamanya ialah tentang titian ash-Shirathal Mustaqim. Dikatakan bahwa lebih halus dari rambut, lebih tajam dari pedang, dan orang yang beriman dan yakin akan lalu di atasnya secepat cetusan kilat. Demikian juga tentang miizaan atau timbangan untuk penimbang amalan, yang pada pandangan orang yang memandang tidak ada beratnya. Demikian juga tentang hal-ihwal surga dan neraka. Semuanya ini, tentang wujudnya tidaklah dapat diketahui dengan dalil akal. Yang dapat diakui oleh akal hanyalah kemungkinan terjadinya dan dapat dimaklumi, lalu dipercayai karena demikian yang didengar dari keterangan Rasul sendiri. Begitu juga hal-ihwal yang dapat dipelajari dan diterima; seperti ilmu tauhid, dari hai nubuwwat dan qudrat Allah dan kebenaran Rasul. Seperti itu pula segala macam ibadah yang bersangkutan dengan tubuh, ada yang diketahui maksudnya dan yang tidak, yaitu seumpama berapa ukuran yang satu nisab pada zakat dan berapa rakaat shalat. Hal ini sudah pernah kita uraikan, yaitu bahwa seorang hamba Allah apabila mengerjakan suatu perintah dengan tidak mengetahui terlebih dahulu apa keuntungan yang akan didapatnya niscaya dia mengerjakan semata-mata ibadah.
Lain halnya jika dia mengetahui akan faedah mengerjakannya, tentu dia kerjakan karena mengharapkan faedahataukeuntungan, meskipun dia tidak percaya. Umpamanya ialah seorang tuan yang menyuruh budaknya memindahkan batu, “Pindahkan batu ini dari sini! “ Sedang si budak tidak tahu apa akibat dari pemindahan itu, semata-mata karena turut perintah. Tetapi kalau si tuan berkata, “Pindahkan batu ini dari sini. Di bawahnya ada harta benda. Boleh kau ambil buat dirimu sendiri." Perintah itu akan segera dilaksanakan, meskipun mulanya dia tidak percaya. Karena mengharapkan keuntungan yang dijanjikan.
“Demikian jugalah dengan ibadah yang berhubung dengan sebutan lidah. Wajiblah ada ibadah lidah yang tidak diketahui artinya. Sehingga apabila dianya dibaca oleh seseorang hamba Allah, dia sadar bahwa dia mengerjakannya membawa itu semata-mata karena melaksanakan perintah dari Allah ﷻ yang disembah, yang berhak menyuruh dan berhak melarang. Lantaran itu kalau Allah ﷻ memakai huruf-huruf di awal surah-surah, sebagaimana Haa Miim, Yaa Siin, Alif Laam Miim, Thaa Siin, si hamba membacanya dengan penuh kesadaran bahwa membaca huruf yang tidak diketahui artinya ini adalah semata-mata melaksanakan perintah, dengan tidak memerlukan tahu akan artinya, ataupun tidak tahu."
Demikianlah dijelaskan oleh Imam ar-Razi.
“Demi Al-Qur'an Yang Mahabijaksana “
(ayat 2)
Dijadikanlah oleh Allah Al-Qur'an menjadi persumpahan untuk menguatkan keterangan yang akan diberikan Allah ﷻ tentang kedudukan Nabi Muhammad ﷺ pada ayat 3 nanti. Demi Af-Qur'an yang Mahabijaksana. Yang penuh dengan hikmah dan rahasia kebenaran, sebagai wahyu yang turun langsung dari Allah sendiri, bagi keselamatan dan bimbingan umat manusia. Guna mengeluarkan manusia itu dari dalam gelap gulita kepada terang benderang. Dia disebut bijaksana, baik karena isinya, atau karena susunannya, atau karena cocok dan sesuai selalu dengan tiap-tiap zaman yang dilaluinya.
“Sesungguhnya engkau adalah termasuk orang-orang yang diutus."
(ayat 3)
Di ayat 2 Allah ﷻ bersumpah “Demi Al-Qur'an Yang Mahabijaksana." Sumpah ini adalah guna menguatkan keterangan yang diberikan Allah ﷻ atau kesaksian Allah di ayat 3 ini bahwa Nabi Muhammad ﷺ benar-benarlah termasuk orang-orang yang diutus oleh Allah. Artinya kalau orang mengakui bahwa dahulu dari Nabi Muhammad ﷺ sudah diutus oleh Allah ﷻ beratus rasul dan beribu nabi-nabi, maka Muhammad adalah salah seorang di antara mereka.
Di antara ayat 2 dengan ayat 3 sangatlah rapat pertaliannya. Bilamana orang kagum membaca dan memerhatikan isi Al-Qur'an, baik bahasanya yang fasih, atau isinya yang tepat, vra'ad-nya dan wa'id-nya (janjinya dan ancamannya), berita yang terkandung di dalamnya, pelajarannya yang kekal, hukumnya yang jitu dan tepat, orang pasti akan mencari siapakah yang membawanya. Dari mana datangnya. Allah ﷻ menguatkan dengan sumpah bahwa Muhammad ﷺ itu adalah termasuk seorang Rasul. Sudah diketahui bahwa Muhammad itu adalah Ummi, tidak tahu menulis dan membaca dan tidak pernah dia belajar kepada seorang guru pun sebelum ayat-ayat AI-Qur'an ini turun setelah genap usianya 40 tahun. Maka kesanggupannya menyampaikan ayat-ayat Al-Qur'an ini dengan jelas, adalah bukti yang terang sekali bahwa dia adalah seorang Rasul. Kalau dia bukan Rasul, yang khusus diutus buat menyampaikan Al-Qur'an ini, tidaklah akan sanggup dia menyampaikan ayat-ayat ini dari kepandaiannya sendiri.
Di samping itu orang-orang kafir selama ini mengingkari dan tidak mau percaya bahwa Muhammad itu Rasulullah. Tetapi setelah Allah ﷻ sendiri mengambil Al-Qur'an menjadi sumpah, maka kalau ada di kalangan yang kafir itu yang berakal dan masih ada sisa pikiran sehat, tidaklah mereka akan dapat membantahnya. Karena memang Al-Qur'an itu suatu susunan bahasa suci yang mengatasi kesanggupan manusia, yang dalam bahasa Arab dinamai al-I'jaaz.
“Atas jalan yang lurus."
(ayat 4)
Dalam ayat 4 yang pendek ini Allah ﷻ telah menjelaskan khittah atau garis per-juangan yang digariskan oleh Muhammad ﷺ dalam dakwahnya. Yaitu membawa manusia berjalan dalam hidup ini di atas garis yang lurus.
Telah diketahui bahwasanya garis lurus ialah jarak yang paling dekat di antara dua titik. Titik pertama ialah kita sendiri, titik kedua ialah tujuan yang dituju. Yang dituju itu ialah Allah ﷻ sendiri. Dari Dia kita datang dan kepada-Nya kita akan kembali. Yang menentukan diri kita itu ialah niat dan kesadaran kita. Kesadaran kepada hidup dan kesadaran kepada tugas.
Apabila kita lihat puncak gunung dengan mata telanjang, terasalah bahwa hubungan di antara kita dengan puncak gunung itu disambungkan oleh satu garis lurus dalam alam ingatan. Padahal kalau sudah kita tempuh ternyata bahwa buat mencapai puncak gunung itu kita akan mendaki dan kita akan menurun, akan melereng dan mendatar. Meskipun dalam perjalanan ternyata jalan itu berbelok-belok, asal saja ingatan kita tetap tidak beralih dari tujuan, yaitu puncak gunung itu, tujuan kita masih tetap lurus.
Demikian juga berlayar di lautan. Pulau atau pelabuhan yang dituju, sudah tampak. Tetapi ombak dan gelombang memukul biduk yang kita kayuhkan, sehingga dapat terbelok kepada yang lain. Namun kemudi yang kita pegang tetap ditujukan kepada pulau atau pelabuhan yang dituju.
Sebab itu maka jalan lurus hendaklah dibina dalam jiwa kita sendiri, bukan dalam keadaan jalan darat yang kadang-kadang terpaksa membelok, menurun dan mendaki.
Tujuan lurus hendaklah dibina dalam hati, meskipun pelayaran kadang-kadang diombang-ambingkan oleh ombak besar dan gelombang.
Lanjutan ayat menjelaskan sifat Allah ﷻ dalam membimbing manusia melalui jalan yang lurus itu.
“Diturunkan oleh Yang Mahaperkasa, Maha Penyayang “
(ayat 5)
Yaitu mengajak manusia agar menempuh jalan yang lurus menuju Allah ﷻ
“Supaya engkau beri ancaman kaum yang tidak pernah diancam bapak-bapak mereka."

Yang dimaksud mulanya dengan ayat ini ialah kaum Quraisy, yang sejak meninggalnya Nabi Ibrahim dan Isma'il tidak pernah lagi ada Nabi atau Rasul diutus Allah ﷻ kepada mereka buat menyampaikan ancaman kepada barangsiapa yang tidak menuruti jalan yang lurus. Sebab itu belumlah mereka mengerti apa tujuan hidup. Belumlah mengerti mereka itu apa artinya Bertuhan Yang Tunggal, tiada bersekutu dengan yang lain. Itulah sebabnya maka mereka menyembah berbagai macam berhala. Padahal dahulunya Nabi Ibrahim dan Nabi Isma'il diperintah Allah mendirikan Ka'bah ialah sebagai pusat tempat berkumpul beribadah dari umat yang sepaham menyembah Allah. Sampai berbagai macam kepercayaan yang karat, yang musyrik dimasukkan ke sekeliling Ka'bah itu.
Lantaran itu,
“Maka mereka pun lalai “

Menjadi lalai dan lengah dan tidak lagi mempunyai pedoman hidup selain mengum-pulkan kekayaan, berbangga dengan keturunan, berperang memperebutkan pengaruh, yang kaya menindas yang miskin, memandang hina rendah kepada perempuan, berebut pengaruh di antara kabilah sesama kabilah.
Kemudian itu dijelaskan lagi oleh Allah ﷻ akibat hidup orang yang hatinya telah lalai itu, apakah kemalangan yang akan menimpa dirinya.
“Sesungguhnya telah pastilah kata atas kebanyakan mereka itu."

Kelalaian memerhatikan keadaan sekeliling, keadaan memerhatikan kepada diri sendiri, kelalaian merenungkan langit dan bumi dan rezeki pemberian Allah ﷻ, me-nyebabkan,
“Maka tidaklah mereka itu beriman."
(ujung ayat 7)
Karena kelalaian mereka sejak semula, Allah pun menetapkan kata, menentukan nasib untuk kebanyakan di antara mereka. Nasibnya ialah termasuk dalam golongan orang yang tidak beriman. Begitulah nasib dan ketentuan bagi kebanyakan mereka, mereka menjadi penantang kebenaran. Karena hati mereka telah tertutup dari petunjuk Allah ﷻ Sudah payah mereka buat bangkit.
“Sesungguhnya telah Kami jadikan pada leher-leher mereka itu belenggu-belenggu."
(pangkal ayat 8)
Leher-leher itu terbelenggu dan belenggu itu terbelit di dagu-dagu mereka."Dan dia pun sampailah ke dagu-dagu mereka." Belenggu itu tebai dan berat sekali, karena tebalnya telah menyundak sampai ke dagu,
“Maka mereka pun tertengadah."

Dalam ayat ini digambarkanlah bahwa dalam hidup di dunia ini mereka tidak mem-punyai kemerdekaan diri lagi karena kelalaian dahulu itu. Mereka telah dibelenggu oleh adat istiadat, oleh kepercayaan yang salah, oleh kemusyrikan dan kebebalan.
“Dan telah Kami jadikan di hadapan mereka suatu sekatan dan di belakang mereka pun suatu sekatan “

Akan maju ke muka terhambat, akan surut ke belakang terhalang, sehingga mereka hanya berputar di sana ke sana saja, tidak ada kemajuan dan tidak pula surut ke belakang, karena putaran hidup bukanlah surut ke belakang melainkan maju ke muka, namun mereka tidak dapat maju. Terkurung, terbelenggu dan terhambat.
“Lalu Kami selubungilah mereka; maka tidaklah mereka dapat melihat."
(ujung ayat 9)
Cobalah gambarkan sekali lagi betapa malang nasib orang itu atau kebanyakan dari mereka itu karena iman tidak ada. Tangan dialihkan ke belakang dan dibawa ke kuduk dan kuduk penuh dengan belenggu, sehingga tersundak ke dagu. Dagu tertengadah sehingga tidak dapat lurus melihat ke muka, melainkan tertengadah ke atas. Sebab itu gelaplah jalan yang akan ditempuh, terselubung. Tidak bebas buat melihat dan mempertimbangkan. Diri telah terbatas dari petunjuk dan kebenaran karena di muka tertutup dan di belakang pun tertutup. Semua jadi gelap, semua jadi terhalang dan terhambat.
“Dan samalah atas mereka, apakah mereka engkau ancam, ataupun tidak engkau ancam mereka; tidaklah mereka akan percaya."
(ayat 10)
Inilah orang yang telah dicap, dicetak atau dimaterai hatinya, sebagaimana tersebut dalam ayat 7 dari surah al-Baqarah, hati dicap sehingga jadi kesat dan kasar. Pendengaran pun dicap dan disumbat sehingga tidak ada yang terdengar, dan penglihatan telah kabur mendekati buta. Adzab siksalah yang akan mereka terima.
(Sesungguhnya telah pasti berlaku perkataan) yakni ketentuan Allah telah pasti (terhadap kebanyakan mereka) yakni azab-Nya telah pasti atas mereka (karena mereka tidak beriman) kebanyakan dari mereka tidak beriman.
